The $1,200 Cup of Coffee: A Day of Geshas at Boot Coffee Campus

Oct 24, 2026

So I went to a pretty cool coffee tasting recently down in San Rafael at the Boot Coffee Campus. If you’ve ever wanted to fall down the rabbit hole of specialty coffee, this is the mothership. The place is run by Valerian Hrala, who is - without exaggeration - the coolest guy in the coffee world. Valerian is a legend: super knowledgeable, zero pretense, and just a genuine joy to learn from. Having taken a class or two with him before, I knew we were in for a treat, but the whole Boot team blew it out of the park with this one.

The star of the show? The coveted Panama Gesha.

If you’re not familiar, Gesha is essentially the crown jewel of the coffee world. I won’t get too deep into the weeds with the science, but these beans are famous for their mind-bending floral, tea-like, and complex fruit profiles. They’re rare, delicate, and notoriously difficult to grow, which makes tasting them a real event.

The room was packed with like-minded coffee folks from all over the Bay Area - roasters large and small, local shop owners, and dedicated coffee lovers. I decided to bring my cousin Jeff along for his birthday. Now, Jeff is a die-hard espresso guy through and through. He knows and respects good coffee, but filter-tasting ultra-rare origins isn't usually his everyday jam. Still, this was a rare opportunity to see the other side of the coffee spectrum at the absolute highest level, and he totally dug it.

We tasted through an unbelievable lineup of Panama Geshas from various renowned farms, comparing the two primary processing methods: washed (crisp, clean, bright) and natural (fruity, deep, complex).

To give you an idea of how rare these beans are, the price tags ranged anywhere from a "modest" low $100s up to a staggering $1,250 per pound.

My absolute favorite of the day? Doña Geña, which rang in at a mere $400 a pound. (Hey, a bargain compared to the $1,200 bag, right?) It had this incredible, vibrant complexity that just stopped you in your tracks. Even cousin Jeff walked away with a huge smile and a whole new appreciation for what a coffee bean can actually do.

Huge thanks to Valerian and the entire Boot Coffee Campus crew for hosting such a memorable day, sharing their expertise, and pouring some of the finest coffee on the planet. It was a damn good day.
