The History of 421 First Street West

Jun 4, 2026

Welcome to the Sunflower Caffè Blog

We've been part of the Sonoma community for nearly two decades, and there are so many stories we're excited to share — about this remarkable place, the people who fill it, our partners, and the history that surrounds us every day. This blog is where we'll give our community a peek behind the counter. It felt right to begin where we begin every morning: 421 First Street West.

A Historic Sonoma Location with Deep History

The location of Sunflower Caffè has a long and fascinating history. Just a short walk from Mission San Francisco Solano and Sonoma Barracks, our caffè sits in the heart of California's rich early history — and steps from Sonoma Plaza, one of the most iconic town squares in the state.

The building itself was constructed by Native American builders between 1836 and 1846 and originally served as the home of Salvador Vallejo, brother of Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, the founder of Sonoma.

The Vallejo family lived in the home until June 1846. Local folklore long claimed that Salvador Vallejo lost the house in a poker game after falling on hard times during a period of unrest in California. In reality, records show that he remained in the home until the time of the Bear Flag Revolt and later sold the property after being unable to lease it. Although the story is more lore than truth, we find it a fun piece of history and storytelling. The gambling story became a lasting metaphor for the broader decline of wealth and political power experienced by many California families following the end of the Gold Rush.

From 1858 to 1864, the building housed Cumberland College, a Presbyterian co-educational boarding school, before later being designated as California Historic Landmark No. 50 — one of only a handful of such landmarks in Sonoma County.

Over the years, 421 First Street West has been home to families, winemakers, storefronts, and restaurants. It has been renovated, expanded with the addition of a second story, and has stood the test of time before eventually becoming the home of our caffè in 2007.

Today, this California Historic Landmark is a place where Sonoma gathers — for morning espresso, afternoon meetings, and special events. This garden restaurant offers a truly one-of-a-kind, authentic historic setting in the heart of Sonoma.

We feel incredibly fortunate to be part of this place and the vibrant community that surrounds it. Being just steps from Sonoma Plaza and surrounded by so many wonderful local shops, restaurants, wineries, and small businesses makes this an especially meaningful place to welcome both locals and visitors every day. We can't wait to share more of what makes it special.
